Why promotions?

Because other practitioners will have an idea of what you know and how to treat you, such as, what kind of falls can you safely be asked to take, or where the instructor should begin introducing new information. Colored belts give the student a way to gauge what he or she has achieved in an overview of the various levels; the various belts help one to know their place in the hierarchy of the dojo--such as to placement during the opening and closing of class. The instructor can quickly tell how to organize the class depending upon who is in attendance and what level they are. Finally, colored belts gives the student a sense of "movement" in their special "journey" toward greater personal achievement and mastery over one's self.
