JULY 2009 AVIATION NEWS

SUGARPINE AVIATORS FLYING CLUB
Brent Dingel, owner of Wilburn Construction, made his first solo on 6/7/09. Brent is a club member at the “E” level. (“E” includes Exercise and flying whereas “M” includes Martial Arts, Exercise and flying).
New Club members at the “M” level (some of whom were already members) are Jim Perez, Will Taylor, Tommy Miles and Mike Kibble. Will Taylor, who built the addition, was already at the “M” level—as was George Zube.
Father’s Day Fly-in was a big success with Johnny Moore (in the Luscombe) and Tom Rahn (piloting the Cherokee 180) conducting many discovery flights. Tommy Miles also flew many friends around in the Cessna 172.
The County of Plumas led by Joe Wilson, Airports Coordinator, gets a “high five” for offering avgas at their cost for the year’s aviation event.
Here’s a heads up for Susanville Airport’s Air Fair on Saturday, August 15th. Air show from 10 AM to 1 PM. Call 530-253-2510 for details.
Relay for Life fly-over happened on June 26th. Participating pilots and aircraft were: 1. Mike Taborski-Centurion 2. Al Hansen-Bonanza 3. Marvin Morgan-Skylane 4. Tommy Miles-Cherokee 180 5. Bob Kimble-Cessna 172 6. Herschel Beal-Luscombe 8a 7. Johnny Moore-Luscombe 8F.
We all flew over the Feather River College race track with our wings waving and lights blazing. The announcer wondered why, after all that flight training; we couldn’t fly straight and level!
We’re looking forward to more activities in the “new addition.” Please check it out.
There
will be two free meetings for the martial arts section of the Flying Club;
Monday, June 1st and Thursday, June 4th, 5:30 to 7:30 PM,
and every Monday and Thursday thereafter.
Club Members using the exercise and mat facilities, please sign the check-in sheet so that we can keep track of activities.
On the Flying Club Mat: GOLDEN YOGA FOR SENIORS Tuesdays 10 – 11 AM Tuesdays for six weeks. Contact Averil Kimble 283-1672 or ajkimble1@yahoo.com
Jon Doerring is preparing to take his first solo cross country and we predict that Brent Dingel will soon accomplish his first solo flight. Both are flying the Cessna 172 3907F.

To the right is a photo as of 4/30/09. Note the special shock absorber closed-cell polyurethane blocks under the world-class 2” German-made Zebra mat. The black area is heavy rubberized mats for exercise machines and weights. At this writing everything under construction is in the steady control of contractor/club member Will Taylor (530-283-4888).

Brian Walmer, our latest Private Pilot is having a fine time taking his kids and all their friends for rides. He is also expanding his area of expertise to the Cherokee 180.
Plumas District Hospital thanked us for participating in a hospital fly-over to help commemorate their 50th year in operation.
I have been asked to participate in Plumas District Hospital’s Wellness Fair May 16th at Dame Shirley Plaza. As a martial artist I, and several club members who are under my training, will demonstrate techniques for minimizing damage during an accidental fall. SEE YOU SOON!

APRIL 2009 AVIATION NEWS
Brian Walmer (right) became a Private Pilot in March. He was one of the few trainees who passed his Private Pilot Knowledge Test before he set foot in an airplane!
Jon Doerring (below) accomplished his First Solo!
On the right, a children’s book explains how to fuel an airplane. (Notice anything peculiar)?
We also owe a debt of gratitude to Steve Jones, Plumber, who fabricated a “hanging bar” and donated it to us. (You can do pull-ups on a hanging bar or simply hang from it to straighten out your back). Here, you are looking at the hanging bar sitting on the unfinished floor. Prime contractor and pilot, Will Taylor, expects the “exercise studio” to be completed sometime this month. We look forward to seeing you soon!

MARCH 2009 AVIATION NEWS
The new building construction was tough going in February. This is what it looked at out the north-facing window (photo on left). When the temperature rose a little, things got better (photo on right).
As I mentioned in last month’s news, a sacrifice must be made to finance this momentous project—and it was. N8019Z, the Cessna U206 that we have owned, operated and loved for 19 years was sold. The purchaser, an Eskimo from the far north, is going to equip it with skis, a belly pod, heavy duty wheels and nose gear and fly supplies to isolated villages. A fitting new job for a fine airplane!
More about the construction; first of all it is expensive to the tune of 10G’s before starting—including waiting weeks for the Airport Land Use Committee to meet and the journey of the plans through the Building Department plan checkers; all this occurring during our month of perfect weather.
We like to do business with people who do business with us. Steve Jones, a Private Pilot and airplane renter dug the foundation. Dixie Lee Higgins, Student Pilot and owner of White Cap Ready Mix poured the foundation. Jeff Hahn, a Private Pilot trained by us is a building contractor and is assisting Will Taylor, one of the few of our Private Pilots that has earned his Tail Wheel Endorsement in the Luscombe 8F. Will is the prime contractor and has done a fine job dealing with the foul weather while still making logical construction progress. Will is a specialist in kitchen and bathroom remodeling. Since will and Jeff both love to do finish work I suspect the best is yet to come. Jon Kennedy, a multi-faceted businessman and Cherokee 180 owner trained here, will assist in the electrical wiring.
All this hoopla about the construction has a point—that is increased perks for Sugarpine Aviators Flying Club member which we will explain in more detail later. Cheers! Johnny& Judy
FEBRUARY 2009 AVIATION NEWS
Because of what we feel is oppressive FAA regulation and interference in our charter, USFS/CDF firefighting and scenic flight operations we have decided (after 29 years) to retire from them. Although we ran an excellent and safe operation under difficult conditions for three decades despite government distractions, we cannot respond to new Federal demands as though we were a large airline. We’ll now devote more time to our student and rental pilots.
We are in the process of building on to our main hangar; the new structure will be the center of new kinds of flying club activity. In order to finance this construction we must sell our Cessna U206; considering the current economic situation, it will be a bargain. If you know someone that may be interested, check with us for details. We’ll fill you in on the new Club structure as we come closer to being able to occupy the building; there will be opportunities for physical fitness programs at reasonable rates as well as access to our “made for the mountains” aircraft.
Steve Jones is digging foundation.
Jeff Hahn is helping.
Will Taylor is the Contractor of Record.
